de Yana Ugrekhelidzes Dokumentarfilm INSTRUCTIONS FOR SURVIVAL begleitet Alexander, einen Transmann, und seine Frau Mari durch eine turbulente Zeit der Konflikte, welche durch in der georgischen Gesellschaft weit verbreitete Anti-LGBTIQa+-Ressentiments verursacht werden. Alexander muss seine Transition geheim halten und wird überdies in seinem Pass weiterhin als Frau ausgewiesen, was bedeutet, dass er auf legalem Weg keine Arbeit finden kann. Aus diesem Grund beschließt Mari für 12,000 Dollar Leihmutter zu werden. Der ursprünglich pragmatische Plan des Paares, mit dem Geld Georgien zu verlassen und ihre Freiheit in Europa zu suchen, wird zu einem emotionalen Dilemma, als Alexander und Mari beginnen, eine Beziehung zu dem ungeborenen Kind aufzubauen.
