ANILOGUE: ALLAH IS NOT OBLIGED

Allah n'est pas obligé
Zaven Najjar, FR, 2025
90 min., OmeU
A powerful coming-of-age story set against the brutality of civil war.

Birahima, a ten-year-old orphan from Guinea, recounts with irony how he is swept into tribal warfare while trying to reach his aunt in Liberia. Yacouba, a shady drifter, persuades him to become a child soldier while assuming the role of a grigriman and witch doctor among the fighters.

Shunted between rival factions, Birahima is forced to grow up quickly and gradually learns to distrust the stories he is told.

Allah Is Not Obliged is based on the novel by Ahmadou Kourouma, published on August 12, 2000, by Éditions du Seuil. The book received the Prix Renaudot the same year and was also awarded the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens and the Amerigo Vespucci Prize.

Zaven Najjar is an illustrator and film director based in Paris. Allah Is Not Obliged is his first feature-length animated film.
