Rauchschwaden steigen über den aufgegrabenen Böden einer schneebedeckten Landschaft auf. In Kanada wird auf einer Fläche so groß wie England Ölsand gewonnen: Eine weltweit stark umstrittene Fördermethode. Doch nicht für alle: „Ich glaube, dass Ölsand das Beste ist, was den Ureinwohnern, den Einwohnern Albertas, den Kanadiern und vielleicht den ganzen Menschen passieren konnte“, sagt der Leiter der Kampagne I LOVE OILSAND.

Dark Eden bietet einen privaten Einblick in das Leben jener, die vom „schwarzen Gold“ profitieren aber so langsam bemerken, dass der anfängliche Segen auch Schattenseiten birgt.

This kind of oil production is often criticized because of its impact on the environment and on people's health. Nevertheless, a group of pro-oil sand activists claim that "it is the best thing that could have happened to us."
